Tips for an Enjoyable Vacation

Whether you are traveling alone or with kids and pets, traveling has unique challenges. However, if you plan ahead, your vacation will be more enjoyable. Consider the following tips.

Lodging

You may be looking for a traditional vacation with hotel rooms or campgrounds, but if you want to be away from the busyness and crowds of tourists for at least part of your day, consider local rentals. For example, you may search for Bald Head Island rentals rather than hotels. A rental may also save you money if you are traveling with other people or with your family. You will have enough room for everyone to spread out, and you may even have outdoor space to enjoy. Book your lodging early so you are sure to have a place to stay when you arrive.

Plan Early

While you are in the vacation planning stage, consider researching the surrounding area for additional activities. Avoid being disappointed by a specific attraction by compiling a list of things you can do. Preplanning also gives you the opportunity to decide what activities you want to do while you are there, so you don’t miss out on anything. This will help you determine what things are most important because it is unlikely that you will be able to do everything on your list. Be aware of how much you plan to do, and make sure you leave time for relaxation.

Season

Pay attention to the time you will be traveling. Research local weather patterns to determine if they will impede your activities. For example, you don’t go to a ski resort in the early fall unless it offers other activities. Popular tourist destinations that do not depend on weather may be visited off season to avoid crowds, and you may be able to save money. However, plan for unfavorable weather. You may also find fewer restaurant and activity options because some businesses may close during slower seasons.

Preparation

Create a packing list to ensure you have everything you will need on your trip. Your carry on should have your important documents, medications, a set of clothing, toiletries and electronics in it.

Consider making two copies of important documents, including your will and itinerary. Leave one set of photocopies with someone at home and take the other with you. If you are taking electronics with you, make sure you back them up to an external hard drive or cloud server before you leave. Finally, let your bank and credit card companies know that you will be traveling. This will prevent embarrassing declined charges.

With a little research and planning and an open mind, you will have an enjoyable vacation experience.
